Nouvelle Théologie and Catholic Renewal in the 1950’s and 1970’s
Woensdag 12 mei 2010
The term ‘nouvelle théologie’ refers to a current of thought in French-speaking catholic theology, which in the years 1930-1950 carried through theological renewal by returning to the sources of Christian faith and by bridging the gap between theology and contemporary thought. In that same period, Catholicism witnessed the development of new ‘progressive’ movements in the area of political and social action. Some of these socio-political movements were related to, or even inspired by, ideas of the new theology. Taken as a whole, these elements of renewal in catholic life and thought are often interpreted as a preparation, which made possible the fundamental change brought about by the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965).
In the 1970’s, following that council, another, equally revolutionary shift occurred in the thought and action of many Catholics in Western Europe. Is it possible to indicate connections between these subsequent waves of renewal? Or are these ‘progressive’ movements fundamentally different from each other through their divergent inspiration and objectives?
The present workshop intends to test this development by focusing on significant changes and new movements in Catholicism in Flanders, in the period before and after the council. Possibly, they can supply relevant indications as to the existence of an intrinsic link between new theological and philosophical ideas and ‘progressive’ movements in West-European Catholicism; or, concerning the question whether these movements and ideas were expressions of a continuing process of renewal, or rather different currents of action and thought.
In addition, these considerations may shed light on the present, ideologically-laden discussion whether the Vatican Council is, basically, to be understood as a breach or rather as a continuation in the evolution of Catholicism during the 20th century.
